Many people who are new to marketing online don’t understand the difference between targeted and untargeted traffic.
A simple way to think of it is to imagine I’m offering a course on marketing. In one room, there’s a group of marketers. In the room next door, there’s a group of gardeners. If I offered the marketing course to both groups, which would you expect to generate the most sales?
The group of marketers, of course.
The reason is because the group of marketers represents a targeted audience—they have an active interest in the information I’m providing, so they’re far more likely to buy what I’m selling.
Paid vs. Free Traffic
This kind of targeted traffic is what you should focus on with your own business. And the best way to get targeted traffic is to pay for it.
Paid traffic is better than so-called “free” traffic for several reasons. For starters, there’s no such thing as free; if you’re not paying money for traffic, you’re paying for it with your time and labor, so it’s not free.
Paid traffic is much faster, too. When you buy traffic, you’re seeing activity right away. You may need to make adjustments or changes to your advertising to achieve the results you want, but at least you have something to work with. Unlike with free traffic, where you’re waiting around hoping that visitors will show up.
And paid traffic is infinitely more scalable. Once you commit to investing in your business, your traffic purchases will increase accordingly—and more quality traffic eventually leads to more sales.
Another advantage to paid traffic is that it’s predictable. You know, for example, that if you put $1 into a good traffic source and you get $1.20 back in revenue, chances are you’ll get similar returns going forward.
Business Is Built for Speed
When you’re just starting out, it’s tempting to say that you’re not ready to do paid traffic yet. That you want to get up and running first, or maybe get some commissions coming in before you invest money in traffic. So you hold back and try to go the free route, which is a mistake.
It’s the wrong approach because it’s slow, and you don’t want anything slow in your business. Business is built for speed. Everything should be moving quickly to propel you to the next level. The most successful info-marketing businesses in the world were all built upon paid traffic.
To give you a better idea of what I mean, let me share my own experience.
In October 2011, I had my first $7,000 month. The next month it grew to $15,000. Then, in December, that number rose again to $45,000. In January 2012, it climbed up to $81,000. And by March I was making $150,000 per month.
When I did $7,000 in a month, I was probably spending $2,000 to $3,000 on paid traffic. To get to $150,000 per month, I just scaled it up to closer to $30,000 to $40,000 per month. That’s what’s possible with paid traffic.
And that’s why, when people ask me how I grew MOBE like I did, my answer is, “I was just doing paid traffic.”
Now, some people may say, “That’s great for you, Matt. But I don’t have that kind of money.”
Fair enough. But it doesn’t matter. Just start from wherever you are, even if you only have $100 per week to spend on traffic.
But start buying traffic and, as the money starts to come in, reinvest as much of it as you can—because that’s how businesses are built.
